The miscellaneous page
Feature of the month This month I am paying special attention to the beautiful geology of the world. Mainly for a class project. Courtesy of Dr. Jay Parish. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that these "things of beauty" shouldn't be taken for granted. More importantly, I became increasingly interested in how some of these beautiful features got there.

This week I am going to focus on the effects of glaciers to the mountain systems of the world. Glaciers are a thick mass of ice formed on land from the compacting of snow that slowly moves across the ground. Glaciers take thousands of years to form. Some areas of the world have been covered by glaciers since the existence of man. Smaller glaciers can occupy streams, these are called valley glaciers. There are larger glaciers that are called ice sheets. These are like ice "continents". There are smaller ice sheets that are called ice caps due to there smaller size.

There are 2 main ways that glaciers move. The first is due to the immense pressure. Once it builds to a certain level the ice begins to give outward. The second way is that glaciers begin to creep or slip along the ground. When this is all going on the ice becomes brittle. Once the ice is brittle it cracks, these cracks are called crevasses. Crevasses make traveling across the surface of a glacier extremely dangerous.

In many cases the movement of the glaciers is not obvious. Glaciers move only 2 cm a day. The rates of movement differ glacier to glacier.

This is one of the most interesting areas for me, glacial errosion. Glaciers have been known to be responsible for the carving away of valleys. Glaciers are capable of moving massive bolders to dust like particles. As the glacier moves down the valley it scrapes and carves away at the valleys walls. This process is called plucking. This happens when the glacial water moves into the cracks of the rocks and refreezes breaking it away. The glacier then carries the rock away. Abrasion is when the rocks and ice basically act as sand paper and file the surface. The powder left behind by the abrasion is called rock flour. Glaciers are also responsible for carving V shaped valleys into U shaped troughs.

The remnants left behind by these fascinating acts of nature are remarkable. They are inspiring and beautiful and definitely worthy of our attention.
